He is a professor of instruction with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colum.edu\/academics\/faculty\/detail\/james-derogatis.html\">Department of English and Creative Writing at Columbia College Chicago<\/a><em>, <\/em>and together with Greg Kot, he co-hosts <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.soundopinions.org\">Sound Opinions<\/a><\/em>, the world\u2019s only rock \u2019n\u2019 roll talk show, an independent production heard on more than 100 public radio stations nationally via PRX, as well as on podcast at <a href=\"https:\/\/soundopinions.org\/\">soundopinions.org<\/a>. He spent 15 years as the pop music critic at <em>The Chicago Sun-Times<\/em>, and continues to cover news and culture as a freelance writer, including via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/contributors\/jim-derogatis\">contributions to <em>The New Yorker<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>DeRogatis is the author of 10 books, among them\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/jimdero.com\/index.php\/press-for-soulless-the-case-against-r-kelly\/\">Soulless: The Case Against R. Kelly<\/a>,<\/em> <em><a href=\"http:\/\/jimdero.com\/BangsContents.htm\">Let It Blurt: The Life and Times of Lester Bangs, America<\/a><\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/jimdero.com\/BangsContents.htm\"><em>\u2019s Greatest Rock Critic<\/em> <\/a>(Broadway Books, 2000), <a href=\"http:\/\/jimdero.com\/LipsOpen.htm\"><em>Staring at Sound: The True Story of Oklahoma<\/em><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/jimdero.com\/LipsOpen.htm\">\u2019<em>s Fabulous Flaming Lips<\/em><\/a> (Broadway, 2006); <em><a href=\"http:\/\/jimdero.com\/TurnOn\/TurnOnOpen.htm\">Turn On Your Mind: Four Decades of Great Psychedelic Rock<\/a><\/em> (Hal Leonard, 2003), and <em><a href=\"http:\/\/jimdero.com\/MilkItOpen.htm\">Milk It! Collected Musings on the Alternative Music Explosion of the <\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/jimdero.com\/MilkItOpen.htm\">\u201990s<\/a><\/em> (Da Capo, 2003).<\/p>\n<p>While DeRogatis jokes that he is not a musician, he <em>is<\/em> a drummer, and he has done time in numerous indie-rock bands dating to the early \u201980s, including <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jneil.com\/airlines\/airlines.html\">Airlines<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/ubl.artistdirect.com\/fp2.asp?layout=a_bio&amp;artistid=41324&amp;p_id=P++++14344\">Speed the Plough<\/a>, the Love Pushers, the Mandrakes, the Wahinis, and the Ex-Lion Tamers. His current art-punk trio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/vortisrock?ref=settings\">Vortis<\/a> has been going strong since 2000, and its eighth album <em>The Miasmic Years<\/em> is available on vinyl from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cavetonerecords.com\/about.html\">Cavetone Records<\/a> or streaming on the platform of your choice<em>. <\/em>In his spare time, he is an avid history buff, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxdioramas.com\/new-page-2\">dedicated miniaturist<\/a> with a love for building box dioramas, and a member of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.military-miniature-society-of-illinois.com\/\">the Military Miniature Society of Illinois<\/a>.
