Born in Jersey City, New Jersey, the year the Beatles arrived in America, Jim DeRogatis began voicing his opinions about rock \u2019n\u2019 roll shortly thereafter. He is a professor of instruction with the Department of English and Creative Writing at Columbia College Chicago<\/a>, <\/em>and together with Greg Kot, he co-hosts Sound Opinions<\/a><\/em>, the world\u2019s only rock \u2019n\u2019 roll talk show, an independent production heard on more than 100 public radio stations nationally via PRX, as well as on podcast at soundopinions.org<\/a>. He spent 15 years as the pop music critic at The Chicago Sun-Times<\/em>, and continues to cover news and culture as a freelance writer, including via contributions to The New Yorker<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

DeRogatis is the author of 10 books, among them\u00a0Soulless: The Case Against R. Kelly<\/a>,<\/em> Let It Blurt: The Life and Times of Lester Bangs, America<\/a><\/em>\u2019s Greatest Rock Critic<\/em> <\/a>(Broadway Books, 2000), Staring at Sound: The True Story of Oklahoma<\/em><\/a>\u2019s Fabulous Flaming Lips<\/em><\/a> (Broadway, 2006); Turn On Your Mind: Four Decades of Great Psychedelic Rock<\/a><\/em> (Hal Leonard, 2003), and Milk It! Collected Musings on the Alternative Music Explosion of the <\/a>\u201990s<\/a><\/em> (Da Capo, 2003).<\/p>\n

While DeRogatis jokes that he is not a musician, he is<\/em> a drummer, and he has done time in numerous indie-rock bands dating to the early \u201980s, including Airlines<\/a>, Speed the Plough<\/a>, the Love Pushers, the Mandrakes, the Wahinis, and the Ex-Lion Tamers. His current art-punk trio Vortis<\/a> has been going strong since 2000, and its eighth album The Miasmic Years<\/em> is available on vinyl from Cavetone Records<\/a> or streaming on the platform of your choice. <\/em>In his spare time, he is an avid history buff, a dedicated miniaturist<\/a> with a love for building box dioramas, and a member of the Military Miniature Society of Illinois<\/a>. He lives on the North Side of Chicago with his wife, Carm\u00e9l<\/a>, while his daughter pursues musical theater.<\/p>\n
